Portable Sound Players

Nowadays, everyone wants to have music with them, and no one is surprised now seeing portable players, because almost everyone has it.

Players have two primary categories:  hard-drive-based and flash-based.

Main merit of HDD-based player is big capacity. They're usually build about 1,8 inch hard drives, so players have even 160Gb space. Frequently, their price is similar to flash players with smaller capacity (for example, iPod nano 16Gb - 169$, iPod Classic 160Gb - 235$). HDD-based players unfortunately have demerits. Above all we must be carefull, because we can easily damage hard disk, for example - while we running. These players is also bigger, just because they have greater battery. In the other hand, players can hold even about 30,000 songs! Often they have much more functions too, like picture viewer or movie player.

Flash-based players don't have moving parts, so you can safely play some sports. They're mostly cheaper than HDD-based and battery can hold more energy (even 60 hours of still playing). We can define many types of portable players.

First type is small players for music only so-called DAP (Digital Audio Player). They have small display (or none). DAPs haven't many functions, basically music players. They're perfect for playing sports, running or something.

Next category are players, who have bigger screen (about 2,5 inches). They're also build for music, but we can play some movie, but often it's not comfortable. This size is quite universal, they're not too big, so you can easily put them in pocket.

Third - players with display around 3,5 inches so-called PMP (Portable Media Player). Here music is important in the same way as movies or photos. PMPs have many functions and big size screens, so they are perfect for traveling to, for example watch some movie or play a game. Now, almost each PMP has touch screen. It ensure a lot of aplications, for example, we can use fingers to paint or type something.

There is one more primary type of players - it's also PMP with display size above 3,5". It's also called MID (Mobile Internet Device), because many of them have Wi-Fi function, so you can find a hotspot and surf on the internet for free. Some of these devices have also GPS module or TV receiver. Also, most of them have operating system. Unfortunately, we must remember, that many functions comes in pair with large price.

For good player you must buy good earphones. I think, that the best combination is warm-sound (more down frequency – bass etc.) player with cold-sound (more high frequency – e.g. percussion) earphones. These features is complementary to each other and generate real good synergy set.

I choose flash-based small iPod Nano 1st generation. It's really tiny and sound pretty well. My headphones is not quite portable, but I'm very satisfied of them – Panasonic HTX7.

So what is your combination of portable sound system and what is your opinion about that?

Wow, that is impressive. I am almost sure, that during my entire life I haven't heard so much songs. I can't even imagine of having more than 3000 songs on my desktop PC at once.

I am still using my old white 512 MB muVo. It suits all my needs.

  2. Never mind having 30 thousand songs on your MP3 player. Imagine having them there legally ;)

Anyway, in fact all of those devices have a more or less sophisticated operating system of their own. If you're an IT student and you didn't realize that, shame on you :)

I also find it funny that lower tones (bass) are "warm" and higher pitch sounds are "cold" :)
IMHO it's all about your headphones, as far as we talk about sound characteristics. The headphone outputs on the music players are pretty generic. Talking about their "sound" is like comparing output from different computer soundcards, it's the same principle. It can be either higher or lower quality output than the other device, but not really "more bassy" and such :) I hope you get the idea ;)

  3. I hate it when companies that are producing such devices try to convince me that I NEED 30GB or more for songs and clips.
IMO they are just brainwashing their customers..

  4. If you want to have good music quality you need to have more memory in your player. But many people don't know that and don't use the 30GB disk space properly.
That's the thing that companies don't talk about either- if you have poor quality mp3 files, it's no use to have expensive earphones and player ;)
And if you want to have good quality music, you have to buy CD and then rip it to the format that provides it (it's harder to steal from Internet music in better quality format than mp3).

Like I already wrote, now I use SE mobile with earphones from the set, because I don't hear much difference when using better devices - urban transport in rush hours is just not the good place to experience audiophile ecstasy ;)

  5. Like I sad before, I don't listen music outside but if I will have to choose, I will probably buy cheaper PMP and spend some extra money on better headphones.
160 GB of capacity isn't to big for movies and HD audio.
If you want to get some good quality audio from Internet search for FLAC format (instead of MP3). It uses lossless compression so you get perfect copy. Portable players probably don't decode FLAC format, but you can convert it to WAV and it should work.

  7. For me MP3 players were made just to entertain people for a short preriod of time. Everyone wonts it but suddenly after few days we trhowing it away...Every kid around the world wont to have MP3-4 players just beacouse their friends already have them. This is how companies are makikg their profits.

  8. Valid point katarzyna, I forgot about the music file format :) It's true that it's harder to find ripped FLAC albums on the internet, but they're there. I personally rip my CDs to FLAC.

    s3515:
Who watches movies on such a small screen? :D
WAV files are a lot bigger in file size, that's why lossless compression formats were invented :) But it's true, not many portable music players support FLAC or even OGG ;)

  9. I have iPhone 2G. For me it's every thing I need. Same reason as Marta(iTunes, photos, easy to use) and also video. Watching movies in such device is best option for long travels in train/bus etc.

  10. My iPod Touch does the job well. I would only use a larger drive, because 8Gb is too small for me. Many depends on your headphones, so spending extra money on them sounds like a good plan. FLAC support in a portable player is a large advantage.

  11. I have iPhone 3g and iPod Classic 160 and I'm really glad I decided to use them. When I'm in longer trip I use iPod because of its big storage. When I'm in Warsaw I use iPhone because I have phone, mail and mp3 built-in one device.

  12. In my opinion use good headphones with poor portable players is mistake. Besides that real good headphones need a solid amp to work really well.

  13. i like ipods, they are well made and sound quality is acceptable. Another thing is that all my ipods ( I had about 3 ) are now broken. Its my car amplifier to blame, but I am no w less ethusiastic to ipods then I was earlier...

  14. What do you think about iPad? A new gadget from Apple. Apple advertise it as a most multimedia device ever. It's a merge of iPod and MacBook. But in my opinion it's a low budget version of netbooks with touch display, which exist on the market for few years
