Heroes of my youth - Part 3 - "Sweet Children"

Today I would like to talk about the music. To be more precise about the music bands. For me it is the most difficulty part of my presentation. Because there are so many great bands. It wasn't easy to choose one.
I was listening to the music of bands by whole CD's. It means I don't like compilations, so during the time I was trying to had one band on "heat". In my youth I listened to many different bands, so I had many favourites. I didn't like any specific kind of music or have any beloved decade. My preferences on bands was also very unstable. It was similar to waves. I have listened to only one band for one or two months and next half of the year something completely different. For instance Sum 41 and after that I have changed to The Doors.

That is why I had so difficult decision. Which one to choose? The latest one or the newer one? Firstly, I had rejected one-song-bands but it also wasn't so easy. Bands like "Real Big Fish" which I knew from great cover of a-ha's band song "Take On Me" and Van Morrison's "Brown Eyed Girl" goes to this category and also The Who - I have known only one but great song "My Generation" - can't be my "Hero of youth". Maybe Oasis? Great British rock band, many hits etc. Or maybe Polish one? Acid Drinkers, famous Polish metal band. What about Guns'n'Roses with fabulous Axel Rose on vocal and Slash as lead guitarist ? As you can see I have just started my list and confusion grossed up. But I haven't even mentioned some great musicians as Bob Dylan or Metallica.

In order not to pull my run-up through, I disclose my "Hero of the youth" - punk rock American band - Green Day.
Mike Dirnt (bass guitar, vocals), Billie Joe Armstrong (vocals, guitar), and Tré Cool (drums, percussion)

History

Band was formed in 1987 by two friends Mike Dirnt and Billie Joe Armstrong. Interesting is that they was only 15 years old at the time. In 1989 they recorded "1,000 Hours" the EP(extended play - contains more music than single, but to short for long-playing record album). Also that year trio dropped "Sweet Children" name and adopted new one - Green Day. Probably due to their fondness to marijuana. There are also different theories about genesis of band name. For example, the name comes from TV show "Sesame Street", where this was used as an equivalent of truant's day.

Green Day made breakthrough success in 1994 when they released "Dookie" - for me the best trio's album. This came also with commercial success which was mainly made by extensive MTV play for music videos of the songs "Longview", "Basket Case" and the greatest hit "When I Come Around". Each of those get No.1 on Modern Rock Tracks charts.

Also in 1994 Green Day joined line-up of Woodstock '94, where they started the mud fight. It was funny at the beginning but lately became disgusting. During this mud fight, a security guard mistook Mike Dirnt as an invading fan and he was punched.

Things you may not knows

Mike Dirnt is a nickname. His real name is Michael Ryan Pritchard also Tré Cool isn't a real name. He was born as Frank Edwin Wright III.

Only Mike Dirnt has high school graduation.

Mike had been working in the kitchen at Rod's Hickory Pit restaurant, where also Billie Joe and his mother were working.

First stage performance took place at Rod's Hickory Pit during their early years.

  1. My fav band is Metallica, although I moved to somewhat calmer music I'm still listening to them from time to time. Metallica developed their own music style back in the 1980s but lately they are just basing on their brand. I don't really like the last two albums...

  4. No, not really. Unless they will be giving tickets for free (like Allegro did with Madonna - this way I didn't have to pay :) ) but I might buy the bootleg from livemetallica.com

  7. My favorite band from my childhood is U2. Now more interested me techno as ATB, Tiesto, but I still like to listen to the good old pieces of U2 or Aerosmith. But now leader U2 -Bono is interested in charitable organizations than the music and the quality of their music is very much reduced.

  8. For clafirication: an EP on average consists of 4 songs with regular playtime of around 3-4 minutes ;)

Favourite band from my childhood? Hard to say, when I was a child I wasn't really interested in the current playing bands, only later I've discovered rock music from the 70's and that's where I found my fav genres :) Bandnames? Led Zeppelin, Deep Purple, Pink Floyd, Yes, Fleetwood Mac and some more obscure ones :) But it's not like I only listen to "old" music ;)
